On Saturday, people were waiting outside The Valley Cycle Workshop half an hour before it opened to collect a refurbished bicycle.
The workshop, an offshoot of The Valley Project, is a community initiative where volunteers repair donated bikes.
Manager Mike Gilmore said there was such a great turnout that they opened the doors half an hour early.
‘‘People could have whatever we had in stock, which is quite a bit this year.’’
Due to an overflow of bikes, Mr Gilmore and his wife Missy decided to hand out as many as possible.
About 30 bikes were given away for a small donation, more than the previous event in December.
Saturday’s event had been better advertised, he said.
Matariki weekend also seemed like a nice time to hand out bicycles.
The workshop received a lot of donated bikes, particularly those outgrown by children or from graduating tertiary students leaving Dunedin.
Mr Gilmore said he ran the workshop just to see the joy in people who received a new bike.
‘‘I like seeing the look on people’s faces when they get a bike and start riding around ... smiles on their face.’’
