Sergeant Ian Paulin, of Dunedin, said the group had congregated at an Albertson Ave property, although police understood they did not live in the suburb.

Police were called after a member of the public was assaulted after trying to intervene in the theft of a vehicle, Sgt Paulin said.

The offenders and vehicle were gone by the time police arrived.
