Police tracking group involved in assault

Police are on the trail of a group of youths linked to an assault on a Good Samaritan who tried to stop a car theft in Port Chalmers on Monday night.

Sergeant Ian Paulin, of Dunedin, said the group had congregated at an Albertson Ave property, although police understood they did not live in the suburb.

Police were called after a member of the public was assaulted after trying to intervene in the theft of a vehicle, Sgt Paulin said.

The offenders and vehicle were gone by the time police arrived.

Police have the names of those believed to be behind the incident.
