Queenstown’s Indian community protest on the streets of central Queenstown yesterday to show solidarity with farmers in their home country.

In India, farmers are opposing the passing of legislation removing guaranteed prices for grain, which they fear will lead to a collapse in prices and incomes.

About 70 people joined the peaceful protest in the resort, walking through the town centre chanting and waving placards.

Queenstown Indian Community president Vivek Verma said similar protests had been held or were planned in New Zealand’s main centres.

"We want the [Indian] Government to listen to the farmer unions and take action."

Those taking part had signed a document laying out their demands that would be sent to the High Commission of India in Wellington, Mr Verma said.

Guaranteeing prices just guarantees ongoing poverty.
