Former Dunedin City Council architect Robert Tongue has died after a short illness.

Mr Tongue (71), who died on Friday, was the council’s architect for 20 years before retiring in 2008.

Notable projects he worked on include the Dunedin Public Art Gallery in the Octagon, John Wickliffe Sq and the Esplanade at St Clair.

A service will be held in St Paul’s Cathedral at 11am on Friday, followed by a private cremation.

I believe Robert was also, quietly, responsible for saving the Town Hall clock tower. The "powers that were" had the Municipal Chambers marked for demolition! RIP Robert.
