The artist of a vandalised artwork on a Chorus cabinet in North Dunedin says the act is "really annoying".

An expletive-ridden video has surfaced of two men defacing the work, scribbling over the name of Dunedin band The Chills and writing the word "Coyote" underneath.

The pair appear to be members of Dunedin pop-punk band Coyote.

Artist Emma Craig said she discovered the video on Monday.

"Yeah, it's definitely really annoying. They're probably thinking it's a big joke."

Ms Craig reached out to the band who she said pretended they were not the culprits.

"They were being overly nice, and saying they will catch who did it, but you could tell it was fake. It's clearly the two people in the video."

She was now in the process of re-doing the work. "We're scraping it off and redoing the stencil."

The project was commissioned by Chorus.

In the video the disguised pair were being filmed by a third person.

The main offender calls himself "Banksy" and says they have "a message for the fat cats in the government..." before pointing at The Chills artwork, saying "this should say Coyote" and drawing over the artwork.

They then left "before the police come and arrest us...".

The incident appears to have happened over the weekend.

Senior Sergeant Ben Butterfield said police had not received any complaints about tagging but would investigate if a complaint was made.

How do people living overseas complain? IMO this is BS, the ODT has a video and these clowns have defaced Dunedin Street art. but no doubt that the Judges will slap them on the hands with a wet bus ticket, maybe the Judge should or could ban them from associating with each others in the band, now that would hit the idiots hard, maybe also banning them from where ever they play.

We know that they are pusillanimous limp lettuce, scared of owning up.

One of those "two men" is surely but a 14 or 15 year old boy.
The other has likely never grown up.
The nice thing about this is that at least a current band making great music is getting exposure.
The other band were relevent 30 years ago. They're part of the same regurgitated Flying Nun related bands that the media and council continue to regurgitate over and over again because they have no idea about the countless great bands and musicians making music in New Zealand to this day.
