Two exceptional athletes with Dunedin roots are ready to take on the world.

Reigning Olympic high jump champion Hamish Kerr and three-time Paralympic gold medallist Anna Grimaldi have been named in a 21-member national athletics squad heading to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

In a statement, Athletics New Zealand chief executive Cam Mitchell said the squad was one of the strongest assembled for the competition.

"From reigning World, Commonwealth and Olympic champions to athletes competing at their first Games, we have exceptional depth and real medal aspirations across multiple events," Mitchell said.

Grimaldi will make her Commonwealth Games debut competing in the women’s 100m T47 sprint.

Hamish Kerr will be defending his high jump records at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The Southern city native, who won her first Paralympic title aged 19, carries impressive momentum after claiming gold in the 200m T47 at the Paris Paralympics and taking bronze at the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi.

Off the track, she has balanced her elite career with study, completing qualifications in quantity surveying and construction management through the University of Otago and Open Polytechnic.

Kerr, who was born in Dunedin in 1996 before growing up in Auckland, heads to Scotland to defend his men’s high jump crown following a dominant period in his career.

He is the only New Zealand track and field competitor ever to hold the Olympic, World and Commonwealth titles simultaneously and he received the Supreme Halberg Award in February.

The Athletics programme will take place at the Scotstoun Sports Campus from July 27 to August 1. — Allied Media
