A look at what's happening in the world of art this week.

Gaye Rowcroft Award

Winners in the Gaye Rowcroft Award at the Otago Art Society's 133rd Annual Exhibition, judged by Elaine Anderson, were: 1, Sheila Brown (Robin in Winter); 2, Sandra Duncan (Raw Strength); 3, Marie Reid (Matt and Hayd's Narnia).

Highly commended awards went to Philip Markham (Approaching Winter, Lake Wanaka) and Erin Anson (Solstice).

The Lula Currie Award was won by Janet Hulland (Stocking up for Winter over Harbour Cone).

The exhibition is on at the Art Station until June 28.

'The Country Wife'

The Globe Theatre's next production will be The Country Wife, a Restoration comedy, written in 1675 by William Wycherley.

By the following century it was considered too outrageous to be performed, and remained so for many years, but is a stage favourite today and acclaimed by academic critics who praise its sharp social satire and openness to different interpretations.

The Country Wife opens on June 25 and is directed by David Corballis.

UK baritone here

British baritone Richard Moody will be touring New Zealand this month with Operatunity as part of the group's daytime concert series.

The theme of tomorrow's concert, at 11am in the Mosgiel Coronation Hall, will be "stage and screen", and artists will perform favourites from The Sound of Music, Carousel, Fiddler on the Roof and Mary Poppins.

Musical champion

Celebrated for his musical inventiveness, Finnish clarinettist Kari Kriiku is recognised as a champion of contemporary music but is equally acclaimed for his performances of the symphonic repertoire. Kriiku is on his first tour with the NZSO and they perform in Dunedin tonight.

NZSO music director Pietari Inkinen returns to the podium for this tour following conducting engagements in Germany, Italy, Estonia, South Korea and the United States.

The programme is 1812 Overture (Tchaikovsky), Puro for Clarinet and Orchestra (Tiensuu) and Scheherazade (Rimsky-Korsakov).

The concert is on at 6.30 tonight in the Dunedin Town Hall.

Chorus wanted

The Really Authentic Gilbert and Sullivan Society is looking for chorus members for its new production, The Yeomen of the Guard.

The production seeks singers, and particularly tenors, for the chorus.

The Yeomen of the Guard is on at the Mayfair Theatre from October 10 to 17.

Rehearsals will be held on Thursday nights and Sunday afternoons from Thursday, July 2.
