Not the usual Nesbo standard

Jo Nesbo novels are anxiously awaited by a legion of adoring fans around the world. Well known for his Harry Hole series, Nesbo explores the dark side of human nature and The Son is no exception.

Sadly this time, the book, while full of detail, deception and atonement, is something of a stop-start affair and is not an easy book to read. The plot involves a model prisoner Sonny whose father was a policeman. Sonny has special gifts, making prisoners gravitate towards him for redemption and blessings.

But Sonny learns details about his father's death which makes him seek revenge. So, out of the prison he goes to seek revenge. The body count is very high, and really out of proportion to the story lines. Chasing Sonny is one of his father's former colleagues who is teamed up with a young intensely ambitious woman. The plot twists and turns with even the gratuitous sex scene something of a disappointment.

Fortunately, the ending makes the struggle through the rest of the book worthwhile, with a revelation no one should see coming.
