Veteran actor Sir John Hurt, known for his roles in Alien, The Elephant Man and Midnight Express, has died at the age of 77.

His agent today confirmed the death of the British acting great, who had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2015.

Sir John recently starred as Father Richard McSorley in Jackie, the biopic of President John F. Kennedy's wife.

He was given the all-clear in October 2015, but last year pulled out of play The Entertainer due to ill-health, according to the BBC.

Sir John received Oscar nominations for The Elephant Man and Midnight Express.

In 2012, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) honoured him with a lifetime achievement award.
