Samantha Eggar began her acclaimed acting career doing Shakespeare, but it was her Oscar-nominated role in psychological thriller The Collector which cemented her reputation as a screen star. London-born, Eggar trained at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. Shakespearian roles kicked off her career but playing kidnap victim Miranda in the 1965 screen adaptation of John Fowles’ novel The Collector, opposite Terence Stamp, made her name. Eggar collected the Cannes Film Festival’s actress prize plus a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination. Further notable roles followed, including Emma Fairfax in Doctor Dolittle opposite Rex Harrison, Walk, Don’t Run with Cary Grant, The Molly MaguiresThe Walking Stick and The Brood. Eggar also amassed notable television credits, ranging from Anna and the King to Starsky & Hutch and Star Trek: The Next Generation. Samantha Eggar died on October 15 aged 86. — Agencies/Allied Media
