New Zealand blues stalwart Bullfrog Rata is back in Dunedin this weekend to play at the New Edinburgh Folk Club as part of the Ruby's Blue Hearts Tour, which also features Laura Collins and Mojo Mama.

The show is promoted as a "night of acoustic swamp blues, piano boogie and alt-country".

Bullfrog Rata, from the depths of the Manawatu, has opened for Tina Turner and Charlie Musselwhite, among others, and has been a regular contributor to Midge Marsden's band.

He has been playing with his own band The Undergators for more than 10 years, and is working on his second CD, Ain't Superstitious, which stems from live recordings made at the Globe, in Auckland. It should be out later in the year.

Wellington's Laura Collins is described in publicity material as the "capital's underground queen of alt-country", and is apparently known around greater Wellington and the North Island for her "soulful vocal style, and lyrics that go straight to the heart".

Collins is working on a new EP, which follows her 2006 release, Cast a line.

The group known as Mojo Mama combines Laura - who leaves the melancholy behind to be replaced by blues 'n' cheek - with Cindy Muggeridge, on boogie keys.

"These women are all about the show, and they like to hand out a little sass and tear it up in true blues mama fashion, without taking themselves too seriously," the publicity blurb continues.

Bullfrog Rata's band includes Earl Pollard on drums and George Barris on bass.

Catch them: Ruby's Blue Hearts Tour plays at the New Edinburgh Folk Club tomorrow, 7.30pm, at St Martin's Hall, Northeast Valley, Dunedin.

Bullfrog Rata and Mojo Mama also perform as part of The Valley Blues Ball, along with Dunedin's King Leo and The Growling Dogs, today, 7.30pm, at St Martin's Hall.
