Former Dunedin musician Matt Joe Gow is now based in Melbourne and it's from there that he spoke to me.

Last time he was in Dunedin, he played Chick's Hotel for the first time.

"It was a solo show, midweek but the place was full and it was one of the best gigs I have played in a long time," Gow says.

His most recent album came out last year and he says it's been all go since then.

"Our first album, The Messenger, came out mid-last year and since then we have been pretty much non-stop between here [Australia] and New Zealand."

Gow says he and his band have played with some pretty impressive people.

"We toured up the east coast here a few times, played some festivals, supported some well-established acts like John Butler Trio, Chris Isaak and my fave, the Jayhawks. We also played a run of shows with Justin Townes Earle in New Zealand and recently the "Day On The Green" shows tour."

Following the success of The Messenger, Gow and his band-mates are working on their sophomore album.

"I am writing very much with the band in mind.

"I feel we have a lot of great new songs that are in some ways quite a departure from the first album."

He is bringing a full band this time, along with support bands Bullet, from Melbourne, and The Unfaithful Ways, from Christchurch.

"Well, with the three bands it's gonna be a really fun night of country, rock 'n' roll and blues."

After this he is back into the studio to work on a side-project.

"I have a duo album or EP to record with Bill Chambers and then will continue to work on the Dead Leaves record.

"The first album still has lots of life left though, with another single and recently a new video that we just released for a song I let you be (myspace.com/mattjoegowmusic), then plenty more shows here in Oz and back to NZ in August for a tour with Bill Chambers.

"It's gonna be busy."
