Award-winning songwriter Wayne Mason will join long-time friend Clinton Brown on a national tour that includes a performance at The Church, Dunedin, this Thursday, March 28.

Well known as the writer of Nature, voted by Apra members as the No 1 song for the past 75 years in 2001, Mason is a founding member of some of the most successful bands in New Zealand, including The Fourmyula and The Warratahs, a group of which Clinton was also a member for a number of years.

This tour sees Mason and Brown performing in more intimate venues; an ideal opportunity for a songwriter to engage with the audience.

''You can't help but get up close and personal in these types of settings, which is what we really enjoy. We can also share a few stories we've gathered over miles and miles of touring both here and overseas,'' Mason says.

Mason penned The Warratahs' first hit, Hands On My Heart, while the title track from his 2008 solo album, Sense Got Out, was voted one of the top 10 songs in the 2008 Apra Silver Scroll Awards and was also a finalist in the prestigious United States-based International Songwriting Competition.

Mason, who was made a Member of New Zealand Order of Merit in 2002 for services to the music industry, says he has particularly fond memories of Dunedin.

''The Fourmyula lived in this amazing old house near the Leith camping ground for two weeks when we played at the Sunset Club; we also had some great gigs at the Savoy when I was in The Warratahs and Clinton and I have performed to a wonderful crowd in the beautiful Waitati Hall. Now my son is studying music at Otago University.''
