Lift staff (from left) Bruce Cocking, Jarryd Hartshorne and Adam Newman prepare the takeoff area at the base of the Shadow Basin chairlift at the Remarkables this week.
The bubbles will be ready at the opening of the lifts for the 25th season at the Remarkables Skifield near Queenstown on Saturday.

With great snow cover before opening day, NZSki ski area manager Ross Lawrence is looking forward to welcoming skiers and snowboarders.

"We have wall-to-wall snow cover, and expect all lifts and all terrain to be open from Saturday, including the terrain parks and the Homeward Run shuttle," he said.

Earlier this week, the snow base was 65cm on the lower mountains, and 85cm at the top.

Through the summer, several improvements have been made to the skifield both inside the base building and out on the slopes.

Some new features have been added to all three terrain parks, including five portable log features, which can be moved around to create new challenges.

Earthworks have included widening the cat track leading down from the Shadow Basin area, making this part of the slopes more accessible for intermediate skiers.

The cafe has had a makeover with new furniture, new paint and a new menu.

A new Rastus Burn Coffee Bar has been set up to serve customers both at the cafe area and through a window to the outside deck.

Children have also been kept in mind.

A new activity trail and a special trail map have been created for children, with points of interest for them to find.

The creche has a new bouncy castle.

The unsealed access road has had major resurfacing work done during summer, but Mr Lawrence still recommended the bus service leading up to the skifield.

"Three new 4x4 buses have been bought, to extend our transport service, which is free for day-pass holders and costs $5 for season-pass holders," he said.

The Remarkables will hold a "Locals Day" on Sunday.

Queenstown locals can take documentation of address to the snow centre on Sunday in time to catch a free bus up to the skifield at 11am, and will receive a free afternoon lift pass to try the slopes.

Mr Lawrence promised the 25-year anniversary would be celebrated with a party later in the season.

Chairlifts at the Remarkables will open at 9am on Saturday, weather permitting.
