John McGlashan College: Luke Robson

There is no place for tour guides in the travels of John McGlashan College head prefect Luke Robson (18).

He has tramped the Kepler and Greenstone tracks, been on the Spirit of Adventure, attended the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre, and next year he hopes to walk the Milford Track and travel through Europe.

It all comes highly recommended by others, but Luke has never been one to take someone else's word.

"I would rather go and see it for myself - it's the adventurer in me.

"If I could head off into the hills for a week, I'd be at home. It's the harmony of the outdoors. Everything is at ease and in its natural state."

In keeping with his love of the outdoors, Luke is captain of the 1st XV rugby team which toured France and Italy this year, and has been coach of the school's U13 team for the past two years.

Luke was first in class for physical education last year, but he is also a Scholars Tie winner for gaining first in geography and school awards for art, speech and English.

Despite his success in the classroom, Luke says he has learnt some of his greatest lessons from the outdoors and his role model, Sir Edmund Hillary.

"A lot about classroom education is based on fending for yourself. Whereas, in the wild, you can't do a lot of things without help - you learn to put your trust in others."

Luke hopes to one day run an outdoor pursuits centre for young people.

Achievements: 1st XV rugby captain (2008); student council chairman and school formal committee (2008); John Wright Speech Award (2006); Sports Blues Award; Bronze and silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

Role model: Sir Edmund Hillary.

Hopes for the future: To travel Europe and study at an English prep school.
