Kaikorai Valley College international student leader Luisa Abadie (17) is stitching up a career as an educator in fabric technology.

Since 2002, Luisa has been creating costumes for the school's Wearable Arts Shows and Stage Challenges, and has even managed to find time in her busy academic day to design and make her own ball gowns for her school formals.

Despite her passion for art and clothing design, Luisa has no plans to follow in the footsteps of high fashion designers such as Yves Saint Laurent.

"You need to have thick skin because people are judging your work all the time. You would also need to have a really strong work ethic and be innovative.

"I would prefer to make clothing for me - something for every day people that is practical and wearable. Not something you would only see on the catwalk."

Instead, she plans to use her leadership skills and passion for education to become a primary school teacher and ultimately hopes to teach fabric technology.

Luisa is committed to her school and has contributed to a variety of extra-curricular activities since year 7.

More recently, she has become a respected leader of the Stage Challenge, Peer Support, Tautuku Camp, Beach Education and International Student groups - all because she can't let an opportunity pass her by.

"I don't want to look back in years to come and have regrets about an opportunity missed."

Achievements: School Wearable Arts designer (2002-04); Stage Challenge (2004-08); Stage Challenge leader (2007-08); Merit in biology, maths, fabric technology (2007); Excellence in Spanish (2006).

Role model: "People who have a strong opinion."

Hopes for the future: To study education at the University of Otago College of Education.
