Kings High School: Lima Manu

When Lima Manu (18) was still in preschool, it wasn't uncommon to see him moon-walking around his parents' living room singing the words of Michael Jackson songs using his brother's hockey stick as a microphone.

The Kings High School deputy head boy has always dreamed of becoming a worldclass entertainer - just like Michael - and based on his recent activities, he is likely to appear on New Zealand television screens soon.

Lima has thrilled audiences as the lead in the school's productions of Joseph, Cruisin', Les Miserables and this year's Godspell.

He also played Chad in Epiphany's production of High School Musical last year, and more recently he starred on the silver screen as a lead in the Otago Short Film production of The Runner.

‘‘Being on stage is a massive buzz. I love wrapping audiences around my little finger. Ever since I was 3, I've admired Michael Jackson's ability to capture an audience's attention.

‘‘He can sing in a lot of different genres - he's versatile. I've taken a leaf out of his book. That's why I sing in the school jazz band, shows, choir, Pacific Island group, church choir and my own band, 3 Fold.''

He was also a hip-hop dancer in the NuZtyle Dance team which were runnersup in the New Zealand Hip-hop Competition in 2005 and has since choreographed and performed in the school's 2008 and 2009 Stage Challenge.

Off stage, Lima is also a high-profile volleyball player.

He captained the school's senior A team to win the New Zealand Volleyball Championship division 4 title and was a New Zealand under-19 triallist this year.

He was also voted Otago's most valuable school volleyballer in 2006 and 2009 and shares his skill as coach of the Queens High School senior A and Kings High School junior A teams.

Despite sporting success, Lima plans to study at the School of Performing Arts in Wellington, which he hopes will be a hop, skip and jump away from the world stage.

‘‘Everything I do - in sport and music - I do for my family. I want to make them proud. It's the least I can do in return for everything they've done for me.''

Achievements: Deputy head boy; Blues awards for drama, music, choir, leadership, stage performance, and sport; junior peer mentor; NZ U19 volleyball trial list (2009); lead in High School Musical (2008).

Role models: My brothers Malo and Ilai.

Hopes for the future: To study at the School of Performing Arts in Wellington.
