Dry to super sweet, with food or by itself

Riesling is one of those grape varieties much loved by winemakers and the trade but can be a wine that punters can’t quite get their head around.

As a riesling lover, I find that a shame, as in its various guises from dry to super sweet it can be a gorgeous accompaniment to food and a marvellous wine to sip on its own. Regular panellists Collins and McLaren joined me to revel in this Momentary Lapse of Riesling.

2016 Bannock Brae Dry Riesling
Price:
$24
Rating: Good to very good

Lovely florals on the nose with honeysuckle and blossom. The palate opens up with lime and wine gums developing a slippery mouthfeel on its crisp, dry palate with a touch of chalkiness. Quite grippy and firm on the finish with a touch of sourness. This one is crying out for food.

2014 Toi Toi Marlborough Reserve Riesling
Price: $22
Rating: Very good to excellent

Roses lime cordial, white flowers, some schisty stoniness, perhaps a hint of pepper: a little bit of kero with time. Creamy entry with the limes flowing through the palate adding a little fruit pith on the close. Dry, yet with gorgeous richness: this leaves one salivating and wanting more.

2015 Allan Scott Generations Dry Riesling
Price:
$26
Rating: Very good

Subtle at first, perfumed with ripe apple, developing notes of freshly baked bread and spices. Smokers lollies, musk and apple in the mouth; a softness on the broad palate. Not distinctly riesling but rather appealing. This one is a definite improver, opening up greatly and bringing in a beguiling note of musk on the crisp finish.

2015 Taylors St Andrews Single Vineyard Clare Valley Riesling
Price:
$45
Rating:  Very good to excellent

Limes on the subtle nose, a stony minerality coming with time. Immediate richness in the mouth, adding apples to the lovely lime core, grapefruit and blood orange with aeration. Bone dry, a chalky texture and zingy acidity yet with all the requisite stuffing, lead to the mouthwatering, long, lime accented finish. Better with time, or with food for now.

2014 Hawkshead Central Otago Riesling
Price:
  $28
Rating:  Very good

Another wine that blossoms with time. Shy at first, fragrant with a soapy hint leading to fruit jubes, grapefruit and citrus pith on the just off-dry palate. Opens up very nicely adding notes of orange and stony minerality as the palate builds in texture and richness before the long, zesty, lipsmacking finish brings it to a tasty close.

2015 Black Peak Riesling
Price:
  $26
Rating:  Excellent

Another strong improver; shy and a touch awkward at first but powers on with aeration. Good intensity and noticeable sweetness with honey, apricot, stonefruits, and some tropical fruit nuances. This grows in textural richness with a pithy tartness providing a neat counterpoint to the sweetness. Nicely balanced and very drinkable.
