Off-duty fireman rescues teens from blaze

Two teenagers trapped inside a burning house have been rescued by an off-duty firefighter who noticed smoke coming from the building on his way home from a shift in Adelaide's south.

Metropolitan Fire Service senior firefighter Tony Mills was driving home from a night shift early on Sunday morning when he noticed smoke and fire in the distance and traced it to a Sheidow Park home.

He arrived at the burning home to find two teenagers trapped inside and rescued the pair by pulling them through a window.

"They were calling out in distress," said Mr Mills.

"I yelled out to ask them to stand back while I used a star dropper to smash a window and clear the glass from the sill."

Firefighters took 30 minutes to extinguish the fire but the home was destroyed.

Fire investigators said the cause of the blaze was accidental but still undetermined.

Mr Mills said he was glad a firefighter was in the right place at the right time to be able to rescue the teenagers but warned members of the public that they should never enter a burning building to attempt a rescue.
