A convicted murderer who was on the run after failing to return to a Sydney jail following work release has been caught.
After about a day on the lam, Mark Whaley, 45, was on Saturday night arrested at Oak Flats.
"The man was identified by a member of the public on a southbound train from central station," police said.
They had been searching for the prisoner since he disappeared on Friday after being allowed out for work release duties at Kirrawee.
Whaley was incarcerated at Parklea prison for murder and maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm.
He had served 22 years of a 26-year sentence.
Police say they expect charges to be laid.
