Second man charged over Victoria 'vampire' slaying

A Victorian prisoner has been charged with murder as a cold case investigation into the 2003 death of a self-professed vampire gigolo continues to round up suspects.

Detectives in Melbourne charged the 44-year-old inmate at Port Phillip Prison on Friday morning in connection with the death of Shane Chartres-Abbott, a male prostitute, who was shot dead during his rape and assault trial.

The development comes three days after Queenslander Warren Shea, 40, was extradited back to Melbourne on the same charge.

Shea did not apply for bail and did not enter a plea during his first court appearance on Thursday, though his lawyer had indicated outside court that he plans to vigorously defend the charge.

A hitman has already been sentenced over Chartres-Abbott's murder, though police have suspected others were involved in the slaying for years.

A Victoria Police statement on Friday noted that "investigators are confident that further arrests will follow".

The 44-year-old will appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday.
