The University of Otago's Campus Watch played a key role in the capture of a man believed to have burgled a student flat on Saturday.

The man was seen acting suspiciously by residents of a flat in Grange St shortly after midday.  After leaving the flat with some items, a Campus Watch team member apprehended him with the help of a member of the public.

‘‘It is another fantastic effort and a great example of the good work Campus Watch are doing in their end of town,'' Acting Senior Sergeant Craig Brown said.

University of Otago communications manager Brigid Feely said it was a good outcome and ‘‘demonstrates the role Campus Watch team play in improving the safety of students in the campus environment''.

Police took the 23-year-old man into custody.

He will appear in the Dunedin District Court today on charges of burglary, theft, opening postal property, being unlawfully on a property and assault.

Residents in the Grange St area expecting courier packages which have not arrived are asked to contact Dunedin police.
