Competition reaches final serving

Today's University of Otago fresher competition final will test the appetite of participants as they tackle a Velvet Burger eating competition.

If weather conditions permit, the remaining six competing freshers will first be required to abseil down the university's chemistry building at 11.30am.

Two contestants will be eliminated after the timed abseil, but if it cannot be held then all six will go through to the final challenge.

Eating begins at 12.30pm on the museum lawn where Orientation's tent city is based.

Yesterday eight freshers battled the wind and rain as they attempted a horizontal bungy challenge.

With a bungy rope tied around their waists, the competitors were made to run across the lawn as the rope became taut, snatch a bottle of iced tea, run back and skull the beverage as quickly as possible.

Each had two attempts before a male and female contestant were eliminated.

A visit from two Shetland ponies provided further entertainment for those on the lawn yesterday.

The ponies, belonging to Logan and Ryan Edgar's aunt Geraldine Edgar, were brought to Dunedin from Balfour as an attraction at the Otago University Students' Association marquee.

Tent city was largely deserted because of the rain yesterday, but regardless, the ponies were a hit with students who posed with the animals for photographs.

Among the few hardy tent dwellers were members of the university's Pacific Islands Centre, who manned a free sausage sizzle and sang songs to passers-by.

Orientation ends tomorrow with a Shapeshifter concert at the Forsyth Barr Stadium.
