Dunedin music is the subject of a half-hour documentary on Radio New Zealand National this weekend.
Musical Chairs examines the University of Otago's contemporary music course, run by Verlaines frontman and classical music scholar Dr Graeme Downes.
RNZ producer Trevor Reekie told the Otago Daily Times the course, which was established in 2000, was unique to Dunedin.
"Arts and music is as much a product of Dunedin as Dunedin is a product of music and art," Reekie says.
"It's also fitting that the University of Otago is the only university in New Zealand with a music department that includes a degree in contemporary music, with senior lecturers who have played prominent roles in the development of the 'Dunedin Sound'."
The programme features interviews with Dr John Drummond, Ian Chapman, Anthonie Tonnon, Lesley Paris and Dr Graeme Downes.
It includes a Dunedin soundtrack by The Chills, The Verlaines, The Clean, The Tweeks, Chris Knox and other local artists.
