
The Logan Park High School pupil said she looked to convey the bird’s cheek and strength in her piece, Clown of the Mountains, which is part of the Otago Art Society’s 147th annual exhibition.
Kezia won the Elizabeth Howie Young Artist Award for an emerging artist aged under 30 and judge Ross Currie picked up on her theme.
"Don’t mess with this bird," he said.
"This is a bold, insightful and accomplished painting."
Kezia does quite a lot of tramping and often comes across kea.
"I always loved their personality," she said.
"They’re very playful, cheeky and friendly."
Kezia said her painting process included getting a clear picture in her mind about what she wanted to get across.
She hoped to one day teach art.
The exhibition showcasing 143 works opened at the Dunedin Railway Station at the weekend and runs until July 22.
Society council member Rose Shepard said the Friday evening launch was well attended and some works had sold.
The gallery at the station is open daily, from 10am to 4pm.
The Hughes Family Trust Award for excellence in any medium was won by Tony Adamson, for his portrait Hotere.
