Yesterday's harness racing meeting at Wingatui may have been the last one at the venue near Dunedin.

"There’s a high likelihood it could be the last one there," Forbury Park Trotting Club chairman Craig Paddon said.

If so, it would not be a bad meet to go out on.

The sun shone and about 300 people — separated into groups because of Covid-19 restrictions — watched both harness and thoroughbred racing at a dual-code event on Otago Anniversary Day.

The Dunedin trotting club joined with the Beaumont Racing Club to run the day.

Beaumont Racing Club president Phil Williams said it went about as well as government restrictions allowed.

"We probably had 300 people," he said.

"There was beautiful weather and good racing."

About 800 to 1000 people could be expected at such an event when Covid-19 was not causing disruption, he said.

"We had 13 races across five hours.

"It was a full-on afternoon, but it went well."

Forbury Park Trotting Club committee member Lex Williams said the day generated a good atmosphere.

He was sad it might not be possible to run a dual-code event in the future.

Among the uncertainties for the Forbury Park Trotting Club is the planned sale of its venue in Dunedin and what will happen to the proceeds.

Race meets are also approved by the national body, Harness Racing New Zealand.

For Nicole Aitken and her father Tony Woods, of Gore, a win at Wingatui yesterday was a long time coming.

They co-own Paradise Valley, which finished first in Forbury Park Trotting Club’s race 1.

Mrs Aitken said her father went to the sales more than 10 years ago and bought a yearling, which they ended up breeding from.

Mrs Aitken said she was fairly confident about 50m from the finish that Paradise Valley was going to win and the horse crossed the line about half a length in front.
