Dunedin mother and daughter Antonella and Valentina, 11, Condliffe plant a shrub during a "Trees for Families" event at Rotary Park, Shiel Hill, yesterday.

Fifty trees and shrubs were planted as part of a long-running project between Rotary Dunedin, Keep Dunedin Beautiful and the Dunedin City Council.

Mrs Condliffe said the family, including Valentina’s older siblings, had been part of the event for about five years, planting a tree in memory of husband and father Steven Condliffe, who died in 2017.

"We really like the initiative. It’s very lovely," she said.

"We do it for the country ... but also for him."

Event co-ordinator Kelsey Porter said the planting was held once a year on Mother’s or Father’s Day.

People bought a plant to honour significant life events like births, deaths or graduations.

"The memory carries on", she said.
