A new toilet facility has popped up in a remote area in Merton Station Rd, near Karitane.

A KiwiRail spokesman said the trackside facility was built for all staff working in, or along, the rail corridor, including locomotive drivers, and provided an essential amenity for those working in the remote location.

KiwiRail had already installed 25 of the toilet units in remote areas across the country, and another 20 were planned.

Each cost between $100,000 and $150,000, he said.
