About 150 people took part in a hīkoi through Dunedin yesterday — walking from the Gardens Grounds in North Dunedin to rally in the Octagon.

It was part of Maranga Mai, Maranga Ake, an event to start a full-year campaign to uphold He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

In a statement, organisers said the kaupapa was a collective community response against legislation and policy undermining Māori mana motuhake (self determination).

These included fast-track approvals, education law changes removing Treaty obligations, disestablishment of Māori-led institutions; and systematic weakening of Treaty protections across legislation.

A whānau day with kai, music and community building at Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ōtepoti concluded the day.
