Is it important an all-girls school has a female principal rather than a "bloke"?

John Grogan, Southland Girls’ High School’s new principal, does not think so and neither do the school’s board of trustees.

He replaces Yvonne Browning, who was the school’s principal for 22 years and resigned at the end of last year.

His appointment marks a milestone in the school’s almost 150-year history, as he becomes the first permanent male principal.

Mr Grogan said his job was to lead the school to be the best it could be for girls.

"I don’t think it matters if I am a bloke, as it is the result that counts."

It was the role of the principal that drew him to apply for the job, he said.

"I am hugely honoured and aware of the responsibility of leading the school and supporting staff to create the best learning environment for all our girls.

"This is something I do with great pride and I know I have a wonderful staff to work with."

Mr Grogan had been the school’s deputy principal for eight years and stepped in as acting principal after

Mrs Browning resigned.

"Following her resignation, I became the acting principal, so it was a natural progression to apply for the principal’s role."

He and his wife, Louise, arrived in New Zealand from England in 2001 and he had previously taught at Māruawai College.

Board presiding member Kelly Tagg said the calibre of applicants was high, reflecting both the strength of educational leadership nationally and the school’s reputation.

"The board undertook a careful and rigorous process, and we are confident we have appointed the right person to lead the school into the future," Mrs Tagg said.

Mr Grogan has taken up the role immediately.
