If they were laid end to end, the daffodils being picked this week to raise funds for the Orokonui Ecosanctuary and Age Concern Otago would reach from the Octagon, in Dunedin, out the Southern Motorway to the centre of Mosgiel.

Rotary Club of Dunedin daffodil project co-ordinator Les Cleveland said due to the extra volunteers and their fast workrate, as many as 35,000 daffodils could be picked during the next four days.

In each of the past years, about 33,000 daffodils had been picked, he said.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Rotary Club of Dunedin's annual daffodil fundraising project, and Mr Cleveland was surprised at how quickly the years had rolled by.

He said the project was established in 1984 to help raise funds to move the Dunedin Botanic Garden aviaries from the lower garden to the upper part.

Since then, the Daffodil Project had bloomed.

"The last 25 years have been wonderfully rewarding," he said.

It was hoped about $10,000 could be raised this year to help the Orokonui Ecosanctuary build a walking track within its predator-proof enclosure and to assist Age Concern Otago put chairs in its Dunedin headquarters, Mr Cleveland said.

The daffodils will be on sale at Countdown supermarket for $3 a bunch from 10am today.

They will also be sold at the Golden Centre, Centre City Mall and the Dunedin Hospital foyer tomorrow and on Friday.
