Four University of Otago students have gained $7000 scholarships to support their bachelor of applied science studies.

South African-born Katherine Irene Mandis is a second-year student, majoring in environmental management, and is a keen horse rider.

She was awarded an Otago leaders of tomorrow scholarship in her first year of study, a Transpower Scholarship organiser said.

Bronwyn van Valkengoed, also an environmental management major, is in the fourth year of her Otago studies and was awarded a Geographical Society prize last year.

Michael Smeaton, of Waihi, is a second-year student majoring in energy management, and spent the final year of his high school studies in Belgium as a Rotary Exchange scholar.

Rebecca Grant is majoring in sport and exercise nutrition and is also studying for a BA in French.

A New Zealand representative athlete, she plans to compete in the national triathlon championships this year.

The latest scholarships were announced at an applied science colloquium at Otago University this week.

Applied science director Associate Prof Greg Anson said the Otago applied science programme was sizeable and growing, and already included 230 students at various stages of their studies.
