Repairs to the Octagon’s covered walkway, required after it was crushed by a runaway truck last year (pictured above), are coming to an end.

Dunedin City Council transport group manager Jeanine Benson said contractors were adding the finishing touches by reinstating lighting and some pavers in the area.

"We are delighted that the canopy has been repaired in time for the cruise ship season."

In April 2024, an out-of-control truck careened through the Octagon, narrowly missing the Robbie Burns statue, only stopping when it crashed into the covered walkway.

The work, including the installation of a steel canopy, footpath repairs and temporary traffic management, was expected to cost $200,000.

Ms Benson said the council would be "seeking to recover costs from the other party".
