Police have increased their presence on the streets of south Dunedin tonight following a gang confrontation this afternoon.
Two masked men wielding an axe attacked a car containing two occupants in King Edward Street about 3.30pm.
The incident involved two local gangs, Senior Sergeant Bruce Ross said.
He would not say which gangs were involved but said that police were having a difficult time convincing witnesses to come forward.
He said police presence would be increased in the area overnight to ensure gang tensions did not escalate.
