Katie-Lee Taylor (15) and Natalie Hormann (20), both of Invercargill, perform during the National Youth Brass Band of New Zealand's free concert at Tahuna Intermediate in Dunedin yesterday.

Pupils were given a rather loud and rousing start to their day when the band played to say, "Thanks for letting us rehearse in your school hall."

The band's 30 members are New Zealand's best brass players aged under 25.

They converged on Dunedin four days ago to begin rehearsals for their concert tour of Otago and Southland.

Much of their rehearsal time was spent at the school.

The band's first official concert of its tour was at the Mayfair Theatre in Dunedin last night.

The band will give a concert in Wanaka today, one in Queenstown tomorrow and one in Invercargill on Saturday.
