A blackout is sweeping across Dunedin this week, as the All Blacks prepare to take on the Wallabies at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

The Dunedin City Council has been running a blackout competition to encourage the city's businesses to show their support for the team.

Events special projects co-ordinator Tammy Jackman said the council had provided packs to businesses, containing black and white balloons, crepe paper and posters to help them get started on their blackout decorations.

''We wanted a fun and really easy way for retailers to get behind the All Blacks and show their support. It also shows visitors to the city, that we stand united as a city.''

More than 150 Dunedin and Mosgiel businesses took part in the challenge, she said.

''It was a fantastic response. We were just blown away.''

Following a visit to each of the competing retailers on Monday by a mystery judge, the Salvation Army Family Store, in Gordon Rd, Mosgiel, was named the best decorated business and Dunedin City Pharmacy, in Princes St, Dunedin was named runner-up.

Staff at the Salvation Army store were delighted by the result.

They won an All Blacks fan pack containing clothing, tickets to the captain's run and tickets to the game.
