School keeps Six60 Scholarships coming

For the fifth year in a row, a Dunedin secondary school has had a former student receive a Six60 Scholarship and the opportunity to reside in the band’s Castle St flat.

Trinity Catholic College alumnus Oliver Lodge, 18, is excited about joining the legacy of the flat and his school’s association with it.

He said Six60 was a great band and it represented Dunedin well.

"I think they’re really awesome and they have got a lot of good messages."

Established in 2021 by the University of Otago and the band, the Six60 Scholarship offers students with an interest in music and the performing arts a rent rebate to live in the flat.

It also provides recipients with access to a Otago University recording studio and mentoring opportunities from the members of Six60.

Mr Lodge, a former Otago Daily Times Class Act recipient, said he had been working on his singing and songwriting skills for the past year as well as on his guitar and keyboard skills.

"I’m just trying to do as many shows as I can locally and make as many connections with people right now."

While he had built a base doing musicals, he was venturing into hip-hop.

He was inspired by the early 1990s group Wu-Tang Clan to make a rap album under the alias "Acknowlodge" called Acknowlodge me.

Mr Lodge attributed his success so far to his great teachers at Trinity, Georgie Watts and Michael Grant.

Ms Watts said she was very proud of all her former students.

"It is one of the things that sort of gets me through the day and makes me think I am doing a good job when students are still making music when they leave here."

She said the school provided lots of good opportunities for students to develop their own style in music.

"I think at Trinity, I let them ... really focus on being who they want to be and making the type of music that they want to make without sort of pigeonholing them."

The former recipients of Six60 Scholarships from Trinity are Emily Kerr-Bell (2022), Sam Meikle (2023), Jakira Brophy (2024) and Jamie Hall (2025).
