In car with 2 machetes

A man found with two machetes in his car while breaching lockdown was warned by police in Dunedin.

Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen said police spoke to a 36-year-old man who was parked in John Wilson Ocean Dr at 5pm on Monday, in breach of Level 4 restrictions.

It was then noticed he was sitting on a machete.

Both the car and the driver were searched and another machete was found.

He told police he was a martial artist.

He was given a Covid educational talk and warned about the machetes.

Earlier, at 11.40am, police were called to BP Mornington after a 21-year-old woman ripped off her mask and threw display items around the store.

She was found outside her home, arrested, and released with a warning.

She and and her 18-year-old female associate were both trespassed from BP.

Another woman, aged 36, was issued a Covid infringement notice after repeatedly refusing to wear a mask at Countdown Andersons Bay on Monday morning.

And at 5.39am yesterday, police were called to St Clair Golf Course after a 41-year-old man in a Nissan Pulsar was seen parked outside, talking to two other men in a car beside him.

The man told police he was out catching up with his two mates because he was bored at home.

The occupants of the other car said one was dropping the other at the golf course so his friend could take him to work at a car wreckers.

‘‘All parties were spoken to and educated about Alert Level 4 restrictions.’’

■Police have narrowed down the source of several loud bangs heard in the Balmacewen area on Saturday night.

Snr Sgt Dinnissen said several residents in the area had identified them as fireworks being set off from a Maori Hill property.

‘‘The persons responsible are asked to contact police to discuss the behaviour before we have to knock on their door.’’
