''Christmas guerrillas in the night'', was how Green Island resident Kath Bond described the covert action.
She and other community members decorated a Main South Rd bus stop late on Tuesday night.
''We thought it was quite a nice Christmas-spirited thing to do in our local community.''
The idea had come from similar action in Wellington last Christmas.
''We didn't get anyone's approval - we just did it.
''It makes for a nice, happy, warm fuzzy kind of thing.''
Ms Bond said she was keen to encourage other people in the city to do the same, perhaps creating some suburban rivalry.
''It could be a community thing - but clean up after yourselves.''
Ms Bond said she would remove the Green Island decorations before Christmas.
