The MetService issued a heavy rain warning for North Otago for the period covering 9pm on Saturday until 9am yesterday, plus a heavy rain watch for Dunedin, amid expectations of up to 60mm of rain in places.

As of last night, 42mm had fallen in Oamaru over the weekend and 38mm in Dunedin, MetService said.

ORC duty flood manager Lauren Hunter said rivers and streams had risen, particularly in the North Otago, Manuherikia and Taieri catchments, but the impact "was at the lower end of the predicted range".

Rivers across the region remained higher than usual, but no significant rain is forecast in the next few days.
