Taieri College is the first recipient to benefit from an initiative established by the SBS Bank and 4Trades Apprenticeship Trust.

The school has been given a $1000 donation by the trust, allowing it to update resources for the school's trades and technology department.

Dunedin SBS manager Lloyd Maole said he was delighted to be part of the project.

''SBS has been a big supporter of the 4Trades programme and sees the value in supporting and mentoring young people entering into the trades industry.

''This donation might help and encourage more into the trades into the future by increasing the accessibility.''

Taieri College principal David Hunter was ''stoked'' to receive the donation.

''It's going to be great for the teachers and department to be able to update tools and increase accessibility.

''The school runs a community event each Tuesday where parents and students involved in the trades academy can come along to learn together and support each other. ''This can only add to the value for our school and its community.''

Taieri College teacher Graeme Watson said he was looking forward to being able to update and increase resources within his department.

''This is going to be great for the students and their learning.

''It will provide more opportunities for that hands-on experience, which is so important in this area of education.''

4Trades manager and former tradesman Tony Denley is keen to get young people to think more about the opportunities that the trades provide.

''There are lots of opportunities today for young people in the trades and the skills you learn allow you to travel and pick up work as you do so.

''With skill shortages throughout New Zealand and around the world, trade apprenticeships are becoming more sought-after.

''The value of 4Trades is the support the apprentice and workplace get which is supported by the high completing success rates of 4Trades,'' Mr Denley said.

Otago Chamber of Commerce chief executive Dougal McGowan was delighted with the development.

''The chamber has a significant role in supporting, nourishing and growing our community.

''We are proud to support this donation as it is recognition of the great work the school is doing in the area of trades and a reward for the hard-working staff who make it happen on a daily basis.''
