Council to fund collection service

The Dunedin City Council will fund the central business district cardboard collection service following the contractor's decision to stop providing the service.

The twice-weekly collection, which had run for the past eight years, was no longer economically viable for the contractor to manage, DCC infrastructure and networks general manager Tony Avery said.

The council had decided to fund the collection service until at least July 1 next year to ensure cardboard from the CBD continued to be collected and recycled in the meantime.

In the longer term, the council would consider a proposal for CBD recycling services as part of the 2015-16 annual plan process.

That followed consultation with CBD residents and businesses earlier this year, which showed it was clear a recycling service was valued by those in the central city, particularly residents.

There would be no interruption to the Monday and Thursday cardboard collection service.
