Council units last for now

The Dunedin City Council's total of housing units will rise to almost 1000 from today, when Mayor Peter Chin officially opens three double and two two-bedroom units in Macandrew Rd, South Dunedin.

Together with recently commissioned units in Scott St, St Kilda, the complex brings the number of council-owned and -managed homes to 996.

The $1.4 million units are the last new homes expected to be built for the time being, after the council decided in January to spend $5 million on a five-year upgrade of existing units instead.

That decision ended recent debate on whether the council should be involved in social housing.

Council property manager Robert Clark said in the past eight years, 30 new units, a mix of two-bedroom and double units, had been added in St Kilda and South Dunedin.
