The crash left traffic backed up on the motorway for most of the afternoon, after a car collided with the barrier between the Westland St on-ramp and the Old Brighton Rd off-ramp, a police spokesperson said.
The road re-opened about 5.30pm, an NZTA spokesman said in an update.
The crash had been reported about 2.50pm and motorists were advised to expect delays while emergency services were at the scene.
A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said two ambulances and one rapid response unit responded.
The ambulance staff treated one person at the scene, before transporting them to Christchurch Hospital by helicopter.
A reporter at the scene said it appeared a vehicle towing a trailer "jack-knifed" and hit the barrier of the motorway, damaging the barrier.
Emergency services were working on towing the vehicle and traffic was backed up in both directions this afternoon, he said.
