The motorway (State Highway 1) was blocked near the intersection of Barnes Dr following the accident.
A police spokeswoman initially said they were notified of the accident at 4:47pm, and up to four people had sustained minor injuries.
A St John spokeswoman later said one ambulance responded, and one person with minor injuries was treated at the scene
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman said crews from Lookout Point and St Kilda attended.
Nobody was trapped in any of the cars, and firefighters helped with the initial traffic management before returning to base.
It was understood there had been other minor incidents on the road through the afternoon.
