Creating a logo is the next stage in Dunedin's Bags for Good reusable bag scheme - and it is up to the public.

Bags for Good co-founder Tess Trotter said the scheme, which aimed to provide reusable fabric bags for shoppers in place of using plastic bags, was set to gather speed in the coming months.

The project needed a logo, so they had put the call out to the community to use its creativity for the scheme.

Ms Trotter said she was excited to see the designs people had submitted.

The competition will offer an overall prize and a designer development prize for Dunedin residents aged under 18. The development prize winner will receive support from Otago Museum design manager Craig Scott.

Entries close on July 24 and the winner will be announced on July 30.

Bags for Good co-founder Fiona Jenkins said that during the event, organisers would screen the film Bag It and distribute patterns, material and other resources so volunteers could start making reusable bags for the scheme.

• Anyone interested in making bags or who has spare fabric to give to the Bags for Good project can email bagsforgood@gmail.com or visit Bags for Good on Facebook.
