Adrian Justin Waa, 38, was jailed for eight years four months after a jury found him guilty of the sex attack and an associated burglary charge following a 2021 trial in the Dunedin District Court.
At a hearing in October, the Parole Board heard the inmate had been moved to the self-care units at the Otago Corrections Facility earlier this year but by July he was in segregation because of alleged conflict with staff.
Waa was then transferred to Christchurch Men’s Prison, where he was under investigation at present, accused of introducing contraband.
Panel convener Serina Bailey, however, said the details of the custodial issues were scant.
On September 22, 2019, Waa went to his victim’s home knowing her boyfriend was in prison.
The victim described being woken early in the morning by banging on her front door and being confronted by the King Cobras member, whom she had only briefly met in the past.
Waa told her he would not leave until she let him in.
The woman sought refuge in her bedroom, but he forced his way in and violated her despite her repeated pleas for him to stop.
Waa threatened to return and continue the abuse ‘‘every single day’’, she said.
The victim was only able to escape later that morning when the man fell asleep in her bed, the court heard during the trial.
During his prison term, the board heard Waa had completed an anti-violence programme and drug-dependency therapy and had undertaken individual sessions with a psychologist.
It was noted his history of convictions included driving matters, unlawful possession of firearms, serious assaults and multiple non-compliance crimes.
While Waa had no approved accommodation, his counsel Maddison Dempsey stressed the allegations he accrued while serving his sentence remained uncorroborated and had severely jeopardised his reintegration opportunities.
A supervising Corrections officer accepted a lot of the evidence against the prisoner appeared anecdotal.
Ms Bailey sought updated information on the factors behind Waa’s transfer to Christchurch and scheduled his next hearing for May.
His sentence expires in June 2028.
