The  family of a man assaulted in a Dunedin road rage incident last week has thanked the members of the public who came to his aid, as the alleged assailant remains at large.

A family member of the victim said he was no longer in hospital, and was ``up and walking around'' following the Friday afternoon incident in Taieri Rd.

Witnesses said they saw the alleged attacker swerve in front of the victim's car, forcing him to stop near Wakari Hospital.

He then stormed out of his car and began smashing the victim's windscreen with his hand, before forcing open the driver's door and repeatedly hitting him.

The victim then stumbled from his car and collapsed on the road as bystanders rushed to his aid.

The family member said they wanted to pass on their thanks to the Good Samaritans who came to the ``very grateful'' victim's aid.

"It was really amazing.

"We're glad that people stopped and helped him.''

A police spokeswoman said yesterday that the alleged offender had not yet been located and inquiries were ongoing.

The man was understood to be known to police.
