A man accused of beating a truck driver with a baton then smashing his windscreen with a car-jack has been declined bail.

The 37-year-old Kaitangata resident appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday following the alleged road-rage incident near Henley on Tuesday.

The defendant was charged with intentional damage, assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon and reckless driving.

He appeared in court with his left arm in a sling and sought bail on a range of conditions.

Judge Dominic Flatley, however, could not be persuaded and remanded the man in custody until next month.

The reasons for his decision are suppressed by law.

The incident unfolded as the Coupland’s Bakeries driver was finishing his shift, travelling between Waihola and Dunedin on State Highway 1, when a ute overtook him.

The truck driver said when the man passed him, he made a middle-fingered gesture and then braked hard when he got in front.

When they reached the traffic lights at the Taieri River Bridge, the ute driver allegedly climbed on to the truck’s footstep and started hitting the driver through the window.

The complainant said the man then returned to his ute before continuing the attack with a weapon.

"He then picked up a jack and smashed my front windscreen," the truck driver said.

Before leaving the scene, the defendant allegedly reversed into the truck, damaging it with his tow ball.

Counsel Alex Bligh indicated an application for electronically monitored bail might be pursued next month.
